Working with Adults & Couples

The People Systems Relational & Neuro-Developmental Approach to Human Dynamics is a dyadic treatment. Even when adults seek therapy for individual issues, their treatment involves assisting them in improving the significant relationships in their life.

Based on my clinical experience, I have learned that people heal when they are able to use the Relational Neuro-Narratives that they are creating during therapy sessions and apply them to change their dynamics with those they care about. I believe the therapeutic process is incomplete when the client only achieves awareness and insight into their challenges, and can actually stifle the client’s development if such insight is not used to develop a new way of interacting with loved ones.

When there is insight without improved dyadic interaction, there is the risk that the person might use cognitive defenses to rationalize the emotional insight. In essence, the client recruits the logically driven left-brain to manipulate the painful emotional awareness if the therapist does not instead directs and supports the client to actively use such awareness to interact in a different way with important people in their life. Long-term healing happens when the client feels the improved sense of agency required to interact in a different way while experiencing how such enhanced agency has an effect on the way they and their significant others feel, act and interact while in the client’s presence.

Thus, whether I am working with an adult client or a couple, the goal is the same – to assist each individual to use the insight into their primitive narrative to interact in a different way with those they care about.
