Thedy Veliz, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist
Purpose
After having worked as an engineer, finance manager, and child and family psychotherapist at mental health agencies; I have found a way to build a vocation that is based on fulfilling my purpose by helping parents understand what is underneath their children’s challenging behaviors.
I have been able to integrate what I learned in the business world through my engineering and finance jobs with my psychotherapy education and clinical experience, and have packaged it through an educational framework embedded in my most recent doctorate education.
Yes, I am a psychotherapist, but I think my most important role is that of a psychoeducator.
By focusing on understanding the personality profile of my clients, parents are able to adjust their parenting approach to match the needs of their kids’ specific personality profile. Another way of saying this is that my job is not only about the current symptoms, but also about the future symptoms that the child might be predispose to exhibit. Thus, my function is above all preventive. If we just focus on the current symptoms without understanding how past symptoms might be expressed through current symptoms, we might miss the overall challenge which can severely impact the quality of life of a person throughout their lives.
